Nove Colli cycling race is 40 years old

From beach to beautiful countryside and back!

Nove Colli is a classic cycling competition that this year takes place on May 23rd.
It’s the 40th edition of this race, which owes the name (Nine Hills) to the number of hilltop villages that it reaches in a 200 km long route that starts and ends in Cesenatico.

The first edition of the race took place in 1970, organized by local cycling enthusiasts. This group of amateur cyclists participated in a few competitions in the Swiss Alps, and decided to organize a similar event in their own backyard, picking a route that would climb up and down a series of scenic hills in the countryside of Romagna.

The competition was a success with both local and European racers, and it has been well attended ever since. Placed ahead of the busy summer touristic season, it gives both participants and spectators a nice taste of local hospitality and joie de vivre.

What to do in Cesenatico

The old town is a great place to walk and feel the pace of a fishermen’s town. Also, north of the stone bridge on the canal, there is the outdoor section of the “Museo of the Marineria”, the Mariner’s Museum: old boats restored to their bright colors, sails included, are afloat in the canal. During the Christmas season, the boats become part of a Nativity scene.

Walking down the canal, we find the fish market, a warehouse with marble tables where fishermen and merchants have been trading seafood for centuries. Many old streets filled with shops and cozy restaurants stretch until the pier.

Going east along the beach walk, hotels, restaurants and shops overlook the coast and the sandy beach. Rocks have been put down in the water a few hundred yards from the beach, keeping the waters low and quiet, making it a safe haven for children and elder swimmers.

Beach volley is very popular, and the main court between the Grand Hotel and the skyscraper has a grandstand, hosting international tournaments in summer. A new trendy sport is beach tennis, while regular tennis can be playes at numerous location throughout the town.

Nightlife in Cesenatico

There are many many choices for dining out in Cesenatico and around: literally hundreds of restaurants can be found on the main beachfront street and surrounding blocks, on both sides of the canal and in any neighbourhood.
The small restaurants on the canal mostly serve seafood, cooked Romagnan style, and reservations are advised, especially during busy weekend days. Many pubs and bars on the beachfront offer more international, on-the-go style fares. Best kept secret joints are usually a few blocks away from the crowded areas. The canal area thrives with shops, bars and music at night, and it makes a great walk in a joyful setting. Music stops at midnight, and most bars in the old city start to close at that time. On the beachfront, things run later and there are more activities for kids and young adults.

There’s a Luna Park in Valverde, a small beach community part of Cesenatico city limits, on its south end. Many smaller arcades and mini-karts parks can be found on the beachfront.

The only remaining disco in Cesenatico is the Energy Paradise, at the south end, (Viale Michelangelo, 2 – phone 0547-86822). There are many pubs which feature live music or host djs. A favorite for live music is the Irish pub Madigan’s, at the north end and about a mile from the water, in Via Mazzini, 176.

How to get there

Cesenatico is on the Adriatic coast, about 20 miles south of Ravenna, 10 miles east of Cesena and 20 miles north of Rimini. Cesenatico borders with Cervia, on its north end.

By Car: from Bologna take highway A-14 or SS9 (Emily Way) heading south towards Rimini and Ancona, exit at Cesena and follow directions to Cesenatico, on SS 304. From Rimini of course head north towards Ravenna.
By Bus: Cesenatico is connected by bus to Cesena and Forli’, as well as Cervia and Rimini. Hourly buses run every day to Cesena, the trip takes about 40 minutes, from Piazza Costa, on the beach to Cesena’s train station. In summer, there are weekly or daily buses to/from major Italian cities.
By Train: the railway line goes along the Adriatic coast, from Ravenna to Rimini and Ancona, there are hourly trains to Ravenna or Rimini. To reach Cesenatico by train from further cities, it is better to get to Cesena (through Bologna) and take the bus from there.

Getting around Cesenatico

Cesenatico is a small beach town: you can easily walk to everything. Bicycles are also a great transportation mean. The canal divides Cesenatico in two parts, Ponente (West) and Levante (East). Ponente is where the Marina is, as well as the Town Hall and the Civic Theater. Most of the hotels and restaurants are on the Levante side, where also shopping and residential centers are. There is a single bridge on the canal to cross sides, in the old city centre. A small passenger and bikes only “ferry”, sized for about a dozen people, continuosly run between the two sides of the canal. Pretty hilarious experience for a nominal fee (25c).

The beach walk from the Grand Hotel (Piazza Costa), north to the canal and the pier is closed to traffic on summer evenings, from 8 pm to midnight. It’s a great time to walk, tasting an freshly made ice cream and listening to local bands. Shops are open, too.

If you drive, remember that parking is metered mostly everywhere along the beachwalk. Most hotels offer free parking to their guests.
