What to do in Cervia

With miles of sandy beaches, the first ‘to do’ activity is of course to lie down in the sun. There are a few hundreds “bagno”, beach establishments which rent beach chairs, umbrellas, and they always features cabins, showers, bathrooms and a bar. They often have snacks or sometimes a full restaurant. There are Bagnos with loud, trendy music and a few beach volley fields for the hip and youngsters, there are others with large play space for kids, and they do business side by side. So, no matter your age or your preferences, you’ll find your perfect spot in the sun.

Milano Marittima has lots of shopping space, high-profile restaurants and bars. Pinarella and Tagliata are more family-oriented: a refreshing pinewood stands between the city and the beach, providing an oasis of silence and shade. A fitness trail runs for about 2 miles across the pinewood, and there are many picnic areas. Cervia is the center, it is bigger and stands somehow in the middle, both geographically and socially. Distances are short, so either by bike or bus, or by a 5 minutes car ride you can reach any part of Cervia area. Hotels and bagnos will carry and updated list of local events, so it’s easy to find information about what’s going on in town.

Nightlife in Cervia and Milano Marittima

The whole Riviera of Romagna is full of places and occasion to enjoy a great evening. Restaurants and bars, both indoor and outdoor, are ubiquitous.

Kids and families can have fun at arcades, mini-golf clubs, mini-karts of different kinds for kids age 3 and up, ice cream parlors and more. Most hotels feature dance shows, sometimes with free lessons of folk dances like waltzer, polka, mazurkas and latin dances, and there are several festivals and free public shows during summer in each neighborhood and village.

Many bagnos will organize night-time parties in summer, especially in August. If you’re spending your days at one bagno, ask the owner or your umbrella-neighbour. Most great evenings I spent in Cervia were at such parties. Everyone can go, most times they’re free, and sometimes they charge an admission fee for a buffet and free bar.

Disco-pubs and actual all-night discoes are very popular too. A short list appears below. Note that most discoes change their name and style each new season, so check a local bar or bagno for the latest trend and for discounted tickets. The entrance fee is usually around 10 euros, and it usually includes a free drink. Drinks at discoes are more expensive than in bars, and unlike in the US, IDs and age are almost never checked. An Italian disco gets crowded only around or after midnight, and usually closes between 3 and 4 am. If you drive to a disco, especially on weekend nights, please be extra careful and absolutely don’t drink and drive.

Cervia and Milano Marittima

Cervia is an ancient Roman development based around the collection and processing of marine salt, and evolved in the centuries to become a respected center of European tourism. North and south of the old town, along the coast, maritime pines separates the sandy beach from the urban area, providing an oasis of green and quietness.

Milano Marittima is at the north end, a strip of luxury villas, hotels and great boutiques and shops. Milano Marittima is a fun place that sleeps late in the morning and parties long in the summer nights.

Pinarella and Tagliata are family-oriented beach communities at the south end. The pine woods next to the beach provide cool air and shadow from mid-day heat, and a great park for jogging and walking.

Getting to Cervia

Cervia and Milano Marittima are on the Adriatic coast, and they are connected to Ravenna on the north and Rimini on the south by highway SS 16 (Adriatic highway). They are about 15 miles south of Ravenna, 15 miles east of Cesena and 20 miles north of Rimini. Cesenatico borders with Cervia, on its south end.

By Car: from Bologna take highway A-14 or SS9 (Emily Way) heading south towards Rimini and Ancona, exit at Cesena and follow directions to Cervia, on SS 16bis. From Rimini of course head north towards Ravenna.
By Bus: Cervia and its beach communities (Milano Marittima, Pinarella, Tagliata) are connected by bus to Cesena and Forli’, as well as Ravenna and Cesenatico. While in summer the Ravenna and Cesenatico routes are the busiest and best served, in winter students and commuters use more the lines to/from Cesena and Forli. In summer, there are weekly or daily buses to/from major Italian cities. A complete set of links can be found at the Town of Cervia website
By Train: the railway line goes along the Adriatic coast, from Ravenna to Rimini and Ancona, there are hourly trains to Ravenna or Rimini.

Getting around Cervia

The civic center of Cervia, where the Town Hall, the Duomo and the Library are, is in withing two blocks and two squares of each other, and walking is much easier than driving or parking. Piazza A. Costa, where the Library is (S. Michele’s tower), is also the public market’s site. The station is in Viale della Stazione, about three blocks from Piazza Garibaldi, where the Town Hall is.

There is a single bus line which travels across the beach communities part of the city limits, that is from Lido di Classe at the north end to Tagliata at the south end, passing through Lido di Savio, Milano Marittima, Cervia and Pinarella. The bus rides from early morning to midnight every 20 minutes or so. Detailed information at Tourist Board: Bus info

Excursions from Cervia

First of all, there are the salt pans, the old ones started by the Romans, and the modern ones still in use. You’ll need a car or a bike to go around and visit them, though. The Tourist Office in Piazza Garibaldi (or the ones in Milano Marittima and Pinarella) can give you a map and directions, as well as advices about what to see.

Ravenna is only a few miles away, with its beautiful mosaics and byzantinian churches, so it makes a great day trip. You can easily go by bus, train, or car. You can start here, on this very site to research about your trip.

If you’re into bycicling, there are free maps available at Tourist Offices with good itineraries of different lengths and difficulties.

Other towns of Romagna like Cesena, Faenza, Bertinoro are all in reach in a few minutes bus or car ride. You can also plan a longer trip to other cultural destinations like Venice, Florence, Ferrara. In particular, you can ride the train from Cervia to Venice, stay a few hours to visit the town and come back, all in one day.

Art and Culture in Cervia

You can start your cultural walk from Piazza Garibaldi, where the Town Hall and the Duomo, the cathedral, are. Observe the flooring and the buildings that form the center of Cervia.
Continue towards the Town Hall, passing under the arch in the middle of the building, and emerging into the adjacent little court, leading into Viale Roma. After walking towards the sea for two blocks, turn left and arrive in Piazza Costa, where the Tower of San Michele stands. You can enter and visit the tower, that is now hosting the public library. From the top floor, you can have a very good view of whole Cervia territory.
Continuing towards the canal, going north, you can spot the old lighthouse. It is currently under restoration, and it will be open soon to tourists.
